all-encompassingly

first of all, why did we name the site “all-encompassingly”? we named it for a mitch hedberg joke:

I use the word ‘totally’ too much. I need to change it up and use a word that is different but has the same meaning. [like, if somebody were to ask me,] “Hey man, do you like submarine sandwiches?”[i could reply,] “all-encompassingly!”

the sense carried by the term (“all-encompassingly”) seemed to match the range of the subject matter (as we envisioned it) for this site. we thought, “who cares that its not a word?! we can’t let a bunch of dictionary companies run our lives” plus, the meaning of the term is pretty easy to decipher.

we launched a blogspot site in march 2003. at the time we were both juniors in college, and roommates who shared an interest in politics. within a month, we moved to all-encompassingly.com. since arriving, we have had four different site designs, served over 200,000 visitors, written over 600 posts with more than three times as many responses, survived endless comment spam, trolls, distractions from blogging (like work and school), and even the threat of a lawsuit. travis got married, doug went abroad for several months to central and south america…yet the blog lives on. it’s like the plant in your kitchen that won’t die.
